School 84 shows off additions
posted: Sept. 18, 2009
The School 84 expansion is finally complete and is right on schedule. A dedication ceremony was held on September 9, 2009, with a public open house on September 13, 2009.
The project included a new gym, along with a new cafeteria, a science room, art room and a music room. The former gym has been converted into a media center. The new construction is virtually identical to the original construction. The glazed brick walls and terrazzo floors seamlessly transition between the old and the new.
The wood floor of the old gym was taken up during the conversion into a media center. The floorboards were cut into book-sized chunks and are being sold as mementoes to alumni.
During the dedication ceremony Indianapolis Public Schools superintendant Eugene White announced that the Center for Inquiry at School 84 was acknowledged as an authorized and fully accredited site for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years program. "IPS is the only Indiana public school system to offer the International Baccalaureate program at the elementary, middle and high school level," explained White.
