And In The OTHER Cultural Districts... - Casey Jo Ailes

And In The Cultural Districts header

Do you have a little bit of competitor in your blood? Well 113 artists did. Saturday, September 12th, was the largest paint day for Art vs. Art ever! The Stutz Business Center and Primary Colours downtown played host as this large group of artists poured every creative idea they had into their canvases. Fifteen dollars got each artist an 18x24 canvas, a set of brushes, and acrylic paints. The catch is they only had four hours to paint.

The moment I stepped into the painting arena on Saturday the intensity was overwhelming; with over 100 artists scattered about it was not silent and not a place for socializing, this was serious business! Well, aside from the occasional glass of beer. I wandered through checking out the competitors for this year's event and came across last year's winner Ryan Alvis. He was creating a colorful painting with a whimsical twist of the flying pig. Alvis is one of many working professional and amateur artists that showed up on Saturday to attempt to win the $3500 grand prize award.
If you have not been to Art vs. Art in the past I hope you are intrigued to attend this year's final bout on Saturday, September 25th at The Vogue in Broad Ripple. Doors open at 8pm and the cost is $7 to get in the door. If you like art, music, chainsaws, and cheering to save or destroy a painting, then this event is for you. There is more; prior to the final bout you can vote for your favorite painting at www.artvsart.com to ensure that it is chosen as one of the top 32 paintings to make it to the final round at The Vogue. Be sure you show up at the Main Event to see which paintings made the cut and cheer on the art boxing-style match as the losing paintings face destruction from the Wheel of Death... unless someone is kind enough to save the art by purchasing it in the auction.
