Random Rippling - Mural of the Central Canal in Broad Ripple Village featured in Supermarket makeover
posted: Jun. 12, 2009
A mural depicting life along the Central Canal in Broad Ripple is now prominently displayed inside the Glendale Marsh Supermarket at the corner of 62nd Street and Keystone Avenue. The mural is on the west wall of the deli section of the store.
Renditions Gallery, located at 62nd and Binford Boulevard, commissioned artist Melinda Spear-Huff for the Marsh project.
"Since [Marsh] is close to Broad Ripple, they wanted to do a scene that was Broad Ripple inspired," explained Melinda. "They chose the canal. When you think of Broad Ripple, that's what you think of."
After completing a small preliminary painting of the scene for Marsh corporate approval, Melinda started the full-sized version high in the air. The actual painting of the 8 foot tall and 37 foot long mural took about 3 weeks.
"It is quite challenging working on scaffolding," said Melinda. "I'm used to working on a mural filling in all of a color at once. With this, I had to spend as much time working on the area I could reach because I can't just move my scaffolding back and forth."
Next time you are in Marsh at Glendale, go to the deli and look above the refrigerated cases. It is great to have another piece of public art.
