Atlas Super Market remembered at reunion

Dion McManus contacted the Gazette a few months ago to announce a reunion for all of those who worked for Sid and Eleanor Maurer at Atlas Supermarket. Atlas was on the corner of 54th and College Avenue for 70 years. Sid stood high in the front office by the entrance every day, greeting the regulars. The beloved neighborhood market closed in 2002. Fresh Market is now on the site.
May 16, 2009, was the date for the reunion at the 71st and Keystone Avenue Knights of Columbus. About 100 past employees attended, including Atlas bagboy David Letterman. David worked at the market while he was a student at Broad Ripple High School. We lost owner Sidney Maurer in 2000. His wife Eleanor attended and enjoyed reminiscing with all of her old friends.

Displays covered one wall of the auditorium with newspaper clippings, photos, and Atlas memorabilia. Stories of the old days were told late into the night. We took a group photo which was followed by the cutting of the cake. Past employees and customers are encouraged to write their remembrances of Atlas and send them to info@broadripplegazette.com.
