Monon Trail Etiquette
posted: Sept. 26, 2008

Greenways are popping up in communities across the country. Here in Indianapolis, Greenways connect people and neighborhoods to nature, cultural and entertainment destinations, and other parks and trails in a safe, clean and pleasant environment.
Whether you use Greenways for fitness or for leisure, they give our community better health, peace and comfort, and a place to reflect on our world.
Today, the Indy Parks Greenways system is comprised of 8 separate greenways and more than 59 miles of trails. Greenways will eventually connect over 125 major destinations like the Zoo, libraries, universities, and parks, throughout our county, to hundreds of Indianapolis neighborhoods.
Indianapolis has one of the busiest Greenway systems in the country, with more than 1.3 million users on the Monon each year alone!
If properly used, a trail can be a safe recreational avenue. Today, Indy Parks wants to remind all greenway users of how you can play a part in keeping our trails safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Stop for cross traffic and obey all signage.
Trail rules are posted every ¼ mile along each Greenway and rule number one is the hours of operation.
As a division of Indy Parks and Recreation, greenways have the same hours of operation as a Park. Dawn to Dusk.
Indianapolis Park Rangers and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will be enforcing these hours of operation. If you are caught on the greenways after hours for any reason, you will be fined for violating the city ordinance.
Pedestrians have the right of way on the greenways. Cyclists and in-line skaters must yield to all other trail users.
Please respect others, regardless of their mode of travel or activity. Share the trail and be courteous. Greenways are multiuse recreational trails appropriate for walkers, joggers, in-line skaters and bicycle riders.
Keep to the right; communicate before passing.
Let other trail users know when you are approaching from behind. Signal by saying "passing on your left" and give others time to respond accordingly.
Cyclists should maintain control and safe speed - Adjust for other users, traffic and trail conditions.
Parents: please keep children from wandering into the oncoming trail lane to avoid accidents.
Do not trespass on or cut through adjacent properties or yards to access a greenway.
Pick up litter. Please pick up and dispose of all pet waste in trash bins.
Keep pets on short leashes (4-6 ft. max.) If using a retractable leash, please keep your pets from wandering into the oncoming lane.
Indy Parks is asking you to be a responsible greenway user.
Remember: Greenways hours of operation are dawn to dusk. If you're caught on the Greenways for any reason after hours, you will be ticketed.
By following these rules and using the trail appropriately during the posted hours of operation, you can help keep Indianapolis' greenways safe.
If you have questions or want to report unsafe trail conditions, please call the Indy Parks Greenways office at 327-7431. And visit indyparks.org/greenways or trail maps, information and events.
