Art vs. Art comes to Vogue Sept. 26 - by Heidi Huff
posted: Sept. 12, 2008

by Heidi Huff

Art Vs. Art is packing up the paint and moving to Broad Ripple. In years past this battle of the brushes took place at the Fountain Square Theatre but in the event's 7th year it's headed to our very own Vogue. The main event is September 26th, 2008; doors open at 8 for cocktails and music with the battle beginning at 10. Preliminary paint days take place regionally weeks before the competition.
On paint day each artist receives identical materials; same brush, same paint, same canvas. They're then given just 4 hours to create their masterpiece. The Indianapolis paint day is Saturday, September 13th from 12-6. Artists can still register online at www.artvsart.com. After the canvases are complete the paintings are posted online for voting. This is the first year to include other cities in the competition. Regional winners from Columbus, Louisville, and Chicago will also be invited to attend.
On event day, attendees will again vote and narrow the field from 32 to 16 paintings in a preliminary round of voting. Now it gets interesting. The 16 remaining paintings duel to the death determined by duly named "Wheel of Death." Each pair of paintings takes the stage and a winner between the two is determined by an applause meter.
The winning painting then moves on to the next round and the other painting's fate is determined by a spin of the wheel. Death by acid bath, samurai sword, or chainsaw are all ominous options, amongst others. This poor painting can only be saved by a bidder willing to pay at least the minimum purchase price. The last canvas standing is crowned the 2008 Art vs. Art winner and receives a $3,000 check, plus fame and glory.
