Friday and Saturday, September 5th and 6th, 2008, the Annual Indianapolis Greek Fest took place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. With the upcoming relocation of the church, this was the last year the event will be held at 40th and Penn. For the 35th year in a row the days were filled with dancing, food, and faith.
Both days, the Holy Trinity Hellenic Dance Troupes performed in traditional garb. Beginners through High School staged several shows to the music of The Greek Company Orchestra. After their shows everyone was invited to get in line, join hands and dance. Don't forget the "OPA!"
After all that dancing it was time to eat. I indulged in Greek Fries, Calamari, and Saganaki - flaming Kasseri cheese. I also munched on the Herculean platter featuring Spanikopita - spinach filo, Tiropita - cheese filo, Humus, Dolmades - beef stuffed grape leaves, meatballs, feta cheese, and Calamata olives. I couldn't leave the last local Greek Fest without having Baklava, complete with honey dripping down my arm.
The Corner Deli offered an olive bar, Greek dry goods, homemade soaps and pastas. At the Agora Market Place patrons could purchase costume jewelry, fisherman caps, cookbooks, and commemorative shirts. Instructional cooking demonstrations were given on how to make baklava, tzatziki - cucumber dip, and taramosalata - caviar dip.
As part of the Greek Festival Community Outreach Programs, canned food donations were collected in exchange for admission and will go to Gleaner's Food Bank. Any unsold food products were donated to Second Helpings.
The building will continue to offer culture of a different kind and will soon be home to the Indianapolis Opera. Look for next year's Greek Fest September 11th and 12th in their new home at 106th and Shelborne in Carmel.
