Mass Ave cultural district: Paperwork - by Heidi Huff

I first heard of the July show at Dean Johnson Gallery from Indianapolis artist Terry Border's blog. Border's www.bentobjects.blogspot.com showcases his tiny twisted trinkets, constructed of wire and everyday items. At the end of June Border posted "How to Catch a Paper Tiger," his latest creation and submission to the Paper Work show at Dean Johnson.
All of the artists contributed something unique to the show, while maintaining their own personal style. Something they all had in common? "Paper" listed as their medium. Gallery Coordinator, Casey Jo Crist came up with the idea to give the 30 artists a single piece of 22" x 30" paper to use for their work.
Crist probably didn't expect to have a blank piece of paper returned as an entry. During the opening reception on July 11th artist Dave Lesh used his piece of paper as a work of interactive art. He invited the evenings attendees to draw or write on the blank piece of paper with the supplies arranged on a pedestal.
Other clever creations were "In Stitches" by Jenny Elkins with paper patches sewn on a printed paper picture. Mike and Holly Schwab submitted "Scissors Always Wins" using literally rock, paper and scissors. Eric Kass didn't bottle up his creativity, but he did bottle up his paper after burning it. Teri Barnett made "Good Fortune" by creating a take-out box and witty works of wisdom.
Emma Overman displayed her mixed media painting "Strolling with Ron and Ollie." You may recognize her style from Fringe Festival flyers and promotions. And speaking of Fringe, next at Dean Johnson is Best of Fringe which hangs all of August.
