FREQUENT FLYER MILES

The Indy International Wine Competition brought in over 3200 wines from around the world to the Indiana State Fairgrounds on June 26-29. Over 3,200 wines from all over the world traveled to Indianapolis for one of the nation's largest wine competitions.
15 panels of judges from the US and Canada awarded medals based on appearance, aroma, taste, and aftertaste:

Best White: Penguin Bay Winery, New York,2007 Gewurztraminer.
Best Red: Elements Winery, California, 2004 Malbec

33 of Indiana's 35 wineries entered the competition that really got it's International start in 1992 when then Purdue professor/enologist Richard P Vine PhD took the competition from an Indiana wine venture to a contest desired by wineries from around the world. Dr Christian Buske of Purdue took over that monumental task in 2007.
"The Indiana wineries went head to head with wines from throughout the world and brought home 251 medals," said Jeanette Merritt, marketing director for the Indiana Wine Grape Council. "This shows that Indiana wines are of high quality and can be judged well against any wine in the world."
Mallow Run Winery of Bargersville, Indiana was awarded the Indiana Governor's Cup as the Best Indiana Winery at the competition.
The Indiana-made Wine of the Year: Chateau Thomas Winery, Plainfield, 2005 CDP wine.

The Indy International contests Indiana grown wines with prizes sponsored by the Indianapolis Wine Enthusiasts Club and the Indiana Winegrowers Guild. To enter, a wine must be composed of more than 85% Indiana grown fruit.
