Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

Life's Ripples header

With the price of gas out of control, we decided to spend memorial weekend touring around Indianapolis. In so doing we realized that we live in a truly vibrant city. The first stop was at Crown Hill Cemetery. Taking in the view from the top of the cemetery is quite impressive. The next few stops included the war memorial, library, Eiteljorg Museum, and of course Circle Center Mall for some shopping. In all that walking, the cleanliness of the city was easy to notice.
We can be proud of this place many of us call home. Touring the city again like a tourist instead of a native made me think about why it is that we are never satisfied with what we have and are always looking for the greener grass on the other side.
When we have a fight with the spouse the first thought is that there is surely someone else out there that we would get along with better. Divorce is so easy and acceptable these days, why not?
I contend our attitude plays a major role in our level of satisfaction. If we put half the effort into improving what is right in our midst rather than looking for the greener grass on the other side, things would not only improve for us, but those around us would benefit as well. The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:11 that he has learned to be content in whatever circumstances he finds himself. Perhaps if we took that same outlook we could stop looking for the bigger better thing or place and enjoy what God has put right in our midst.
