The Wine Scene - by Jill A. Ditmire

Got BOX???
In the 2008 world of fashion, retro styles of the 60's and 70's dominate the market. Yet when the wine world brings back vessels of that time used to distribute wine to millions of happy happy consumers-no criticism, just contentment-the effort gets clipped in the knees. (As wine drinkers know, wine does have "legs")
What was wrong with the Manischevitz screw cap bottles? Or the easy going box wines of EJ Gallo and Fetzer and Peter Viello?
All were accepted and enjoyed back then, so why not now?
You know I am a proponent of the screw cap/stelvin wines. A bottle topped with the twist off cap will always be fresh-no cork taint. And easy to use-no corkscrew to lose during the security check at the airport.
Ditto from Ditty on the return of box wines. The bladder in the box keeps the juice safe and secure from the number one killer of wine-air. Once a bottle is opened it starts to die. Bladders in boxes keep the juice flowing to tap into glass. NO exposure.
And good news for fellow "tree huggers" like myself-box wines are actually MORE green than bottled wines, when you do a side by side comparison of materials and machines used and waste and pollution created to make product.
Whew. I'm thirsty. Bag a box and enjoy the flavor, ease and informality of one of the planet's greatest pleasures-wine in a box.

Powers Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington-4 bottles in one box; fresh, fruit forward flavors of wild black cherry, soft vanilla and subtle toasty oak.

Fish Eye Pinot Grigio-3 bottles in one box; crisp, fresh, dry white with soft flavors of honeydew melon, granny smith apple and pear.
