PODSS - PORTABLE OVERT SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM
What is a POD? Wireless, portable, surveillance system that will disrupt, detect and displace crime, which helps reduce violent crime.
• This system is an OVERT system. This means that the system is intended to increase the perceived risk of capture, so the potential offender believes he will be caught. The offender must be aware of the camera and must believe the cameras present a risk to him.
• The pods can be deployed almost anywhere. They offer real time images along with video backup for evidence collection.
• The principle objectives are to enhance public safety, protecting infrastructure, preventing terrorism, preventing/deterring crime and public disorder, reducing the fear of crime, identifying criminal activity & suspects, identifying and gathering evidence, documenting police actions to safeguard citizen and police officer rights and ultimately reducing the cost and impact of crime to the community.
• Phase One of the camera project located cameras in the downtown area to protect the city's infrastructure.
• Phase Two of the project will locate cameras in neighborhoods where criminal activity has been a concern and where it is believed these cameras can be beneficial and can augment the work of the police officers in the area.
• Phase Two of the project will include 20 additional cameras at the following locations. These locations were chosen as a pilot of the concept based on crime statistics as well as the nature of the location lending itself to improvement by the addition of a camera.
