Beats from a Broad Ripple Rat - by Lisa Battiston

Beats from a Broad Ripple Rat header

And it's happened. I've reached the age where everyone I know is getting married. They tell me the next phase to watch out for is the baby phase - when all of my female friends get pregnant. Yikes.
Personally, I enjoy not being married. It's a very permanent decision. My parents are still happily married and raised me to believe that marriage is meant to last one's lifetime. I can barely settle on what shirt to wear on a Friday night, so making a decision as serious as marriage can wait until I'm a little older. Maybe more mature. Ready for that kind of permanence.
However, that being said, when friends of mine find the right person that they feel they'd like to spend the rest of their lives with, I am absolutely, 100 percent enthralled for them. Maybe it's these new hormones running through me that make me aw at newborns, but I start to cry when I think about friends of mine being in love and acting upon it.
And, yes, when the Peggy Sues' singer told me she was getting married, I burst into tears. And it may have been the couple of beers I consumed fueling the waterworks, but I was just so happy for them. Am so happy for them. How absolutely lovely! Knowing our singer and her love bug, I know how well they complement one another. They are each other's rock. They are a solid unit. To watch them is to only hope for a love like that. They told me they planned on a late summer wedding, more than likely because our singer's baby love is scheduled to head to Iraq in September. Which I find slightly heartbreaking, considering all of the above.
And when I gush to people that our singer's getting married, they all cock their head, ask how that can happen. Why, you might ask?
Well, dear reader. Our singer is a girl. And so is her fiancé. And the state and federal government don't recognize any kind of union between them.
Now, my columns have never been politically based in the least, and I'm not going to start now. But I will say that to find love on any kind of level is a blessing and I find it atrocious that anyone would want to deny that. The people that would deny them or how they feel for one another. . . It makes me very angry. To find that big, grand love is what a person dreams about. Because all that crap in the first paragraph about marriage and babies? I could really care less about marriage and babies. What I want is the love of my life. Someone to take care of. Someone to take care of me. Someone who understands me. Someone I can laugh with, can confide in, and vice versa.
And if our singer and her girl found that? My whole heart is in it with them.
