The History of the Riviera Club: Seventy-Five years of Summer Fun and More: part 4 - By Mario Morone
by Mario Morone
posted: Feb. 29, 2008

by Mario Morone

The next few issues of the Gazette will feature parts of a story written by Mario Morone on the history of one of the best-known and best-hidden jewels of the north side of the city. Yes, the Riviera Club is that place with all the swimming pools you see behind the trees on Westfield and Illinois. It is also a piece of Indianapolis history.

Two new professionals from the Carmel Racket Club, David Willingham and Slater Hogan were hired to enhance the Riviera Club's tennis program. The junior program is designed for players of all ages and abilities. The Adult 1-2-3 Program is designed for introductory players interested in tennis.

A picnic area overlooks the scenic banks of the White River. In addition to swimming and tennis lessons, ballroom dancing, karate, Pilates and yoga are also offered.
The Riviera Club dining area features a theme dinner the third Thursday of each month. Lunch is available the first Wednesday and third Thursday while a brunch is offered the first Sunday of each month. Reservations are required.
On-site caterer Jacqueline Bols began her culinary education at Southampton University in England. After graduation, she went to the French and Italian Riviera to begin her career as a Chef on private yachts that took her to Cannes, Saint Tropez, Monaco, Portofino and the Amalfi Coast. She was recognized for her culinary artistry when she received the Charles Heidsieck Award. Bols began her gourmet catering company in 2001 with its style of cuisine being modern French, using fresh and imaginative ingredients in her menu selections.

Entering the Riviera's Club entrance is like a drive back into the 1950s to an idyllic private club. Viewing the swimming pool from the concession stand or second floor dining area provides a view of bright colored settees where sunbathers lounge. On the south side of Westfield Boulevard, Chase Bank, Quik Exchange Gas Station and CVS drugstore have often changed ownership, but the Riviera Club has remained a treasured recreational oasis. Kincaid's Meat Market has been in the area since 1921.
As the Riviera Club celebrates its 75th Anniversary throughout 2008, the late James H. Makin's vision continues. Maureen Faul noted, "There is an ongoing intergenerational blending that unites families and friends across communities here."
