The History of the Riviera Club: Seventy-Five years of Summer Fun and More: part 3 - By Mario Morone
posted: Feb. 15, 2008

by Mario Morone

The next few issues of the Gazette will feature parts of a story written by Mario Morone on the history of one of the best-known and best-hidden jewels of the north side of the city. Yes, the Riviera Club is that place with all the swimming pools you see behind the trees on Westfield and Illinois. It is also a piece of Indianapolis history.

Kathy Ellis won two Gold Medals in the medley relay as the "flyer" and as the anchor of the 400 meter freestyle relay where she set world records at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She also captured two Bronze Medals in the 100 meter freestyle and butterfly swimming event.
Becky Collins was featured on the front cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in 1959 as an Olympic hopeful. Though she narrowly missed qualifying for the 1960 Olympics, Collins won a Gold Medal in the butterfly at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago, Illinois. Galvich was a former National Diving Champion himself. He also coached the Riviera Aquabells, who are synchronized swimmers, in addition to producing and directing the Annual Riviera Water Show. Galvich's premature death in 1960 at age 43 was a huge loss to the swimming world. He is remembered for the great champions he developed and his sportsmanship.
Gene Lee began his coaching career at Michigan Shores in Chicago, Illinois where his top swimmer was Nancy Van Ness. He relocated to Indianapolis to accept a coaching position with the Indianapolis Athletic Club and later coached at the Riviera Club. He produced several National and World Champions, including Olympians Kathy & Maddie Ellis, according to www.indianaswimming.us/coaches.htm. Lee also coached swim teams at the Indianapolis Scarborough Peace Games.
As some families began moving to Indianapolis suburbs during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, the Riviera Club faced financial challenges like other private clubs. Declining enrollment and higher maintenance costs of aged infrastructure were among them. Some flood damage and a cooler 2004 summer prompted the club to delay vendor payments and maximize its $150,000 credit line, according to a February 8, 2005 Indianapolis Star article.
Club President and Board Chairman Kathy Hahn Keiner and Vice Chairman Randy Strand led an effort to revive the Riviera Club's finances and operations. Strand said, "We received broad support from members, including nearly $87,000 in donations after a November 2004, letter explained our financial challenges." Surveys were sent to members asking for their input about future priorities and projects. Volunteers staffed the Riviera Club's facilities in the off-seasons after a reduction in workforce to save money.
In February of 2005, the Riviera Club raised its dues and assessed its members a one-time fee in order to restructure its finances. Club officials explained these necessary new fees to long-time members and the media. Approximately $750,000 was eventually raised to pay vendor bills and outstanding debt. A cash reserve fund was also established to fund needed improvements on the club's outdoor diving tank and indoor diving platform. A newly elected Board of Directors and executive advisory committee were formed. Engineering, financial, information technology and legal professionals were among those making suggestions to maintain the Riviera Club's family friendly atmosphere as it entered a new era with these upgrades.
Marlene Hatch became the first membership and marketing director of the Riviera Club in the spring of 2007. Julie Howson is the events and program coordinator who grew up in the area.
A native of South Bend, Indiana, Hatch grew up swimming and was attracted to the Riviera Club when her family moved to Indianapolis. Her son and daughter learned to swim at a young age. She discussed how the Riviera Club navigated rough financial waters in early 2005.
"There were a series of town hall meetings to determine the Riviera Club's future. It was too valuable to families of the community and too unique of a place to not continue. Members rallied and made a plan to address current issues and to secure its future", she explained.
"Over the last three years, over $1.5 million of renovations (capital improvements and maintenance) have been completed. There is a new fitness center, an exercise room, a renovation of the ballroom, dining room and recreation building. Landscaping has been done and a refurbishment of the north tennis courts. A child care facility has also been added", Hatch mentioned.
"We have added new programs for children and adults. For the Riviera Club's 75th Anniversary, we are offering lifetime memberships for $7,500 to either individuals or families", she said. Over 1,400 families are currently Riviera Club members.
She added, "We are showcasing our members' artwork in the main building. The first Thursday of each month is a shopping night in conjunction with a buffet dinner to allow our member community business partners to promote their products and services. We started our community partnership program in 2006 to support healthy neighborhoods by helping grow membership and participation in family-oriented community organizations. We work with neighborhood not-for-profits, including schools and churches. The Broad Ripple Village Association is one of our membership partners."
