Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen
posted: Feb. 15, 2008

Life's Ripples header

January 23rd is a date that is prominent in my life. It is the date that I first went out with my wife, and it also happens to be her birthday. This year the date is even more significant because it is the date that I had surgery to remove cancer. The final results won't be in until the end of February, but so far all the preliminary results indicate that all the cancer was removed.
We left the house really early the day of the surgery as I was suppose to arrive at the hospital by 7:00 a.m. As we were driving, I was surprised that so many people were up and moving that early in the morning. It struck me that people often just drift through their lives unaware of the suffering of others, and I resolved to be more compassionate in the future.
I was very lucky. Everything about my surgery went perfectly. The machine that actually did my surgery was an amazing piece of technology, but it still had to be guided by the surgeon's hands. I thought, as they were prepping me for the surgery, how similar I was to that machine. No, I'm not all that amazing as a piece of technology, but everything I do that is good and honorable is attributed to God's hand guiding me.
The human side of us is capable of so much destruction that can be brought about in a variety of ways. However, God's hand is there for us and He can bring out the best in us. Most of us never know how good or how valuable we can be because we are content to live in a world of limitations. Let God do amazing things with your life this Lenten season. Don't be satisfied with the status quo. It can be an incredible journey if you let God be the guide.
