To Spit or Not to Spit
I spent last week in California judging the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. This year's contest brought in over 4,000 entries so the 13 panels of 60 selected judges from across the nation sniffed, swirled, sipped and SPIT nearly 200 wines a day.
Day one for my panel was dry style rose wines and Pinot Noir bottles that retail for over $35. We judges don't know where it is from or how much it costs as each glass of wine arrives at the table in wine glass ink marked with a number on the base of the stem. We judge 10-12 of those glasses each "round" until we have tasted the entire offering.
Day two offered up Viognier and port.
The Viognier impressed the most as, of the 80 judged, over half offered that wonderfully aromatic, exotic nose followed by rich, silky flavors of white peach and honeysuckle.
If you haven't tried Viognier (VEE-OWN-NYAY), you should. It's a delicious, dry, rich, white wine that will smitten "red wine only" fans as well.
I suggest the affordable California Jewel Collection Viognier available at select local wine shoppes.
See all the winners and learn how you can taste them all at one place in one day with a visit to www.winejudging.com
