Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes #94

The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from the original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I have transcribed all the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

Here is the ninety-fourth installment:

Broad Ripple
11th April 1900

The Board met in special session all present
The Board met having ascertained the width of Coil St from the County records further action in the matter of opening said street has deferred till some further meeting.
It was moved & seconded that the Board adjourn to meet April 20th in special session to consider a resolution in regard to the dividing lines in the wards of the town.

CURFEW ORDINANCE no 13

"An Ordinance" Prohibiting persons under sixteen years of age from being on the streets, alleys or public places in the Town of Broad Ripple Ind between certain hours of the night and ______ penalties for violation thereof.

Section 2

It is hereby made unlawful for any person, guardian or other person having the legal care and custody of any person under sixteen years of age to allow or permit any such child, ward or other person under such age which in such legal custody to go or be in or upon any of the streets, alleys or public places in said Town within the time prohibited in Section I of this ordinance - unless there exists a reasonable necessity therefore. Any person violating the provisions of this section, shall on conviction be fined in any sum not less then one nor more than Ten Dollars for each offense and stand committed until such fines and costs are paid.

Section 3

The Town Marshal or any of his Deputies while on duty is hereby authorized to arrest without warrant any person willfully violating the provisions of Section I of this Ordinance and retain such person for a reasonable time in which complaint can be made and a warrant issued and served. Be it further ordained that no child or minor person arrested under the provisions of this ordinance shall be placed in confinement until they have first been taken home to ascertain the parents or guardians wishes and the parents or guardian shall have refused to be held responsible for the observance of the provisions of this ordinance by said minor person.
