Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen
posted: Jan. 04, 2008

Life's Ripples header

Life is very precious and I believe it is a gift from above. Therefore, it is hard for me to understand why we treat life with such little dignity and respect. I have been appalled by all the recent shootings in Indianapolis. I just cannot fathom the need to kill another person, regardless of the reason. Often we just don't appreciate health and life until it is taken away from us.
We never really know what is going to fall into our lives. On November 23, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I have to admit that I had a few moments of self-pity and anger, but very quickly I came to the realization that God was present and working with me through this situation. The cancer was found on the first biopsy and was found early enough to be treated. It could have easily been missed and given more time to advance, but I believe God guided that doctor's hand through the procedure. I urge people to get regular check-ups because it is true that the earlier they find things the more options there are for treatment. Due to my particular circumstances, my cancer can be successfully treated with surgery which will take place in January.
It is amazing to me how many people have extended empathy and genuine support. God works through each of us in amazing ways and I urge you to be God's comfort for someone who needs you. If you're considering what to put down for your new year's resolutions, that could be one that would truly make a difference in the new year.
