Robyn Hitchcock at Luna Music
posted: Nov. 16, 2007

By Phil Graybiel

On Friday, November 9, 2007, Robyn Hitchcock performed an unplugged set at Luna Music at 52nd and College Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. Fifteen minutes before the show began, Hitchcock walked in leisurely in his black overcoat, carrying his guitar in one hand on the chilly autumn evening. The show was the preshow and signing before his main, scheduled concert on Saturday night at the Music Mill in Clearwater Crossing. With tea lights beaming behind him, he entertained new and old fans by playing his guitar and harmonica as Sean Nelson, who is also the front man of the band Harvey Danger, sang backing vocals. Fans from Indianapolis and out of town came to see him perform their favorite songs as well as have him sign autographs.

"It was pure Robyn," said Dave Reason from Lafayette, Ind., "He did a great array of songs from when he was in the Soft Boys to brand new stuff. It was all great and it all holds up." Reason is a long time fan of Hitchcock's music and has been going to his concerts since a friend gave him a copy of I Often Dream of Trains in 1984. He thought it was odd that so few people were at the venue when he arrived a half hour before hand. He was afraid he was going to have to fight through a crowd.
The crowd was thin prior to the performance, but by six o'clock, about 50 to 60 loyal fans had filed in for the show. Coming from the back of the store, Hitchcock addressed the crowd in front of the store front window with his English accent.
"Thanks for coming out and bearing witness to these candles here," he said, "It gives a sacramental feel to this little shopping area."

As Hitchcock pounded out songs with his acoustic guitar, new fans stood with there arms crossed and bobbed their heads as old fans sat next to their children who were drawing pictures and playing with stickers.
"I remember seeing him on the show "120 minutes" as a kid and it was good to see him again," said Luna employee Greg Llewellyn.
Indianapolis is the seventh show on Hitchcock's 13-stop tour this November with Sean Nelson. Being from London, England, he is spending time in both the United States and Canada.
"He wanted to do shows in places he doesn't usually do on this tour. That's why he decided to go to Canada," said Nelson.
Hitchcock has just recently released a box set of reissued recordings called I Wanna Go Backwards which includes many unreleased bonus tracks and is available at Luna Music on both CD and LP.
