Broad Ripple Music Fest rocked the north side of Indy - By Lindsey Taylor

The Broad Ripple Fall Music Festival (BRFMF) took place in the village this past Saturday and brought the sound of all genres of music to the air. Any and all music lovers would have had a relaxing time at this all-day event.

The atmosphere was relaxed and laid back at the Monon Coffee Co. located on East Westfield, when acoustic act Luke Austin Daugherty played. Families and friends were able to visit with each other while they listened to the easy-listening music of Daugherty.

Daugherty's music had a political theme that promoted peace and non-violent activity towards human nature. His folksy, country music gave the Coffee Co. a unique vibe that set his act apart from the happenings outside of the coffee shop (www.lukeaustindaugherty.com, or www.myspace.com/lukeaustindaugherty).

Across the street from the Monon Coffee Co. at the Monkey's Tale, two of the band members from Sonic Gypsys rocked the patio with cover songs from bands and performers like Pink Floyd, Elton John, the Eagles and the Rolling Stones just to name a few.

Only an electric guitar and keyboard were played, giving the patrons something to sing along with. The two band members were all but shy and encouraged crowd participation (www.myspace.com/sonicgypsies).

Around the corner on Broad Ripple Avenue, Indy CD and Vinyl had a completely different sound coming from its doors. DJ Brian Luellen spun techno and house music for patrons to shop and BRFMF participants to enjoy.

The booth was busy as Luellen kept the beats coming from his turntables: The backdrop was just right for the atmosphere the music gave with posters of every band and performer imaginable decorating the walls (www.myspace.com/djbee_ryan).

A little further down the road at Luna Music located on College Avenue, the band Rodeo Ruby Love set up and played the best they could with the amount of space that was given to them. They were squeezed up front and had no room for drums but still had a very upbeat sound.

Rodeo Ruby Love's sound mixed the xylophone with maracas, guitars and bass and, in return, gave the audience a pop-rock sound. They then threw lyrics of love and being broken hearted into their beats (www.myspace.com/rodeorubylove).

At Boulevard Place Café outside of Broad Ripple located on Boulevard Place, another acoustic act took the stage. Brooke McKinney played for an almost-full café as she shared her personal bluesy songs with them. McKinney showed off her guitar-playing skills and filled the café with her raspy voice.

In addition to good music each venue had a local charity that it represented. There were charity representatives stationed to collect donations for their specific cause. They also gave information about what their charity does and how the donations would help benefit Indy as a community.

The BRFMF was an atmosphere unlike any other concert event that has taken place in the city this past summer. It was a great way to set off the fall season. With cooler air and every type of music playing, what visitor or local villager could ask for more?
