Fall for these Indiana Wines:
Be it tailgate or turkey, these are some tried and true, affordable wines to make the season as spectacular on the palate as it is for the eye.
Easley Winery Chambourcin - Great with BBQ ribs and grilled brats. The tailgate red will satisfy those who like big, brambly red wines.
Easley Winery 2004 Governors Riesling - Softly sweet yet crisp white wine perfect for the spread at Thanksgiving or the white wine fans at your tailgate.
Simmons Winery Autumn Harvest - Sweet, rich, lush glass that is perfect after an afternoon of raking leaves. Or watching your neighbors rake leaves.
Ferrin's Fruit Winery Cherry Blossom - Just like a slice of fresh, juicy, tart n tasty homemade cherry pie.
Visit www.indianawines.org for directions to wineries, how to order and find theses and other Indiana wines.
Portuguese Potable
One of the zingy tastes from my recent trip to Portugal was the "portonic." This refreshing drink calls for two parts tonic water and one part white port. Pour into tall glass with ice and squeeze lemon or lime slice over liquid. Stir and enjoy.
We enjoyed this sipper as an aperitif with a selection of olives, cheese and bread and also as a late afternoon pick-me-up in between wine tastings.
White Port offers lovely aromas and flavors of almonds and caramel. It's hard to find in the US but you will find a delicious and affordable white port, the Quinta Do Infantado and a deli case with imported meats, cheeses and olives to nibble as you sip at Mass Ave Wine Shoppe, 878 Mass. Ave. in downtown Indy. 972-7966 www.massavewine.com
In My Bin
2005 Blackstone Chardonnay - Rich, ripe and ready this balanced dry white teems with succulent tropical fruit flavors-pineapple, mango, Chimayo. Soft touch of smoky Oak gives it Burgundian touch. Lingering flavors perfect for grilled or blackened halibut, salmon, roast chicken or pork tenderloin. Delicious!
2003 Murphy-Goode Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley - Another reason to drink Sonoma county Cabernet when you want ripe, lush, fruit flavors. This full-bodied dry red offers aromas and flavors of black cherry, wild strawberry, black raspberry, vanilla bean, eucalyptus and soft touch of white pepper. Fire up the grill and enjoy this voluptuous red with steak, Italian sausage or black peppered tuna.
