Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith

Howling at the Moon header

One of my all-time favorite memories is of a lazy Sunday morning in Old Town Naples, Florida, sitting outside of a quaint little restaurant eating breakfast with my brother. The atmosphere was dynamite. The palms were beautiful and the sun was heavenly. The best part of this mind's picture was the motorcycle that came cruising down the main street. The biker was a great looking man and in his sidecar was this wonderful dog with goggles on, loving every minute of his ride. I often reflect back to that fun and happy scene. It was a Kodak moment. You don't see that everyday. So today I was drifting back to that happy thought and hours later, coincidentally, into my store walked our local version of this happy duo.
This issue's "Gazette Pet" is Cozmo, the four and a half year old Australian Shepherd mix. He is one beautiful dog with amazing blue eyes. Unlike the dog of my memory, he will not tolerate goggles when he rides in the side car with his owners Tony Furdock and Ann Kalberer. (Dog goggles are called "Doggles" and are sold at The Three Dog Bakery.) However, he is strapped in with his harness for safety's sake.

Tony and Ann told me that Cozmo was a stray that was found in the street three years ago. They gave him a home and now he is living the good life. Tony thought that he needed a motorcycle with a side car so his side kick could accompany him on all his errands. He decided on a 2003 Russian made Ural. You see, Tony works as a handyman extraordinaire for a living so the two are always going to the hardware store together for supplies for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, roofing, welding and bicycle repair. After they run errands and get their jobs done they can be sighted at the Broad Ripple Bark Park playing. Sometimes they take their bicycle with them on the back of the motorcycle.
Cozmo likes to chew on grasses and pick up rocks in his yard. He often goes to Marott Park at 73rd and College where he likes to get in the river to cool off. If you spot this duo (or trio) I guarantee it will make you smile.
Who will be the next "Gazette Pet"? I'm looking. Do you know of a good candidate?
