Rive - Village poet
by Alan Hague
posted: Aug. 10, 2007

While restocking papers at Einstein Bros. Bagels, I stumbled upon a pampered doggie lounging in front of the restaurant while being kept cool by a battery-operated fan. This, of course, required some investigation. I found the dog's owner inside. Patricia Wood explained that she carries the fan in her car so Rive, her dog, doesn't overheat. During our conversation Patricia revealed that Rive is a poet! She just happened to have one of the dog's poems in her bag and gave it to me for publication. A dog poet. What is next, dogs and cats keeping diaries? (see Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith)

NO FAIR

My mom is fat;
I'm getting there too
but without eating
what mom gets to.

She fills up her tummy
with lots of sweets
while I only chew
on little doggy treats.

Each time my grandma
sneaks me a bite
of her chocolate candy
or any sweets in sight

mom yells, "No."
Now that's not fair.
My Grandma is nice,
she knows how to share.

When my mom bakes
it's for dad and herself.
But my food always
comes dry off the shelf.

Mom isn't nice,
she doesn't share,
which isn't fair.
It's just not fair.
