Aussie Band plays Indy CD - By Rebecca Davidson
posted: Jul. 27, 2007

By Rebecca Davidson

Dappled Cities, Australian bred, just left their homeland to head to America to promote their first American album, Granddance. They stopped by Indy CD & Vinyl for a special free in-store concert before playing at Birdy's on Wednesday, July 18, 2007.
Several people gathered around the "Play Area" in Indy CD & Vinyl on Broad Ripple Ave. on Wednesday. The band, amended from five members to three for this small venue, played several vibrant acoustic songs. Guitarists Dave Rennick and Ned Cooke were joined by keyboard player Tim Derricourt. They began with "Fire Fire Fire" and attempted "Peach" - a song apparently from a long-forgotten album of theirs; they couldn't quite remember how it went! But the band graciously attempted to play "Peach" as a fan-request from the audience. Then they slipped more easily to "Holy Chord."
What you miss when you don't come to these in-store or private sets is the humorous rapport the band builds with the audience. More often than not, in-store shows only pull a small group of people, most of which are dedicated fans of the band. At small intimate sets like this one, you can get the spectrum of responses and reactions from the assembled audience - the mesmerized joy from the faces of hardcore fans who've only ever been able to admire the band from afar - to the raised eyebrows of interest on the faces of the kids that just popped in off the street.
The band ended with "Vision Bell" and stuck around to talk to some fans and encourage everyone to come out to Birdy's.
The band's MySpace page (www.myspace.com/dappledcitiesfly) hooked me. This is not a band intended to play acoustically. . . The electronic sounds and the rhythm sections that can only be appreciated when the full band plays are what have catapulted this band into one of my recent favorites.
You'll find that Dappled Cities readily call themselves "unashamedly romantic," and it's very appropriate for their style of music.
Their music is now available in the US and is worth the purchase. Check them out for yourself on MySpace.com or on their website at www.dappledcitiesfly.com.
