The Wine Scene - by Jill A. Ditmire

Wine Scene header

in my bin...

MAN Vintners, Chenin Blanc, South Africa- Crisp, fresh, dry, but fruit forward white wine with succulent aromas of lime zest and flavors of citrus, lime and honeydew melon. The three men who make MAN took their hobby to retail with the blessing of their wives and the promise to name the wine after them. So MAN doesn't mean more testosterone, rather it is the summation of the first initials of their wives' names. Smart guys. Savvy MAN.
Tabali, Pinot Noir, Chile- If you're looking for a soft, round, red wine that offers easy drinking pleasure with aromas and flavors of cassis, strawberry and white pepper, then this is the ticket. Grapes grown in a beautiful valley near the ocean in Chile get the much-desired combo of sunny days and cool nights. YOU get the pleasure of indulging in this great value.

2007 Indiana State Fair: Pay for a corn dog or drink wine free??

The folks at the Indiana State Fair have dubbed the 2007 (two-weeks-plus-a -few-extra-days) gathering at the corner of 38th and Fall Creek Blvd as "The Year of Corn."
No need to send notice to the nation's comedians. They are already all over this. Oh sure, the ISF has a marketing plan to seriously promote the kernel with corn influenced food booths, corn-ingredient-oriented cooking contests and corn shucking races.
BIG SIGH.
But leave it to Indiana's most innovative farmers to offer another option for State Fair goers this year. Free wine tasting.
Actually, this event takes place BEFORE the fair officially starts, but the State Fair sponsors the Indy International Wine Competition. Last year's competition, headed by Purdue enologists Dr. Richard Vine and Ellen Butz, brought in 3800 different labels/wines from 17 countries making the 2006 event the largest International Wine Competition in the United States.
Gold means sold at Indy and medal winners help consumers find their way through the maze of bottles on store shelves and walls. The three-day competition and its dedicated staff, volunteers and judges deserve a standing ovation for that service. This year, they prefer that you would sit.
If you're 21, you can sit and sip two gold medal wines when you visit the wine competition in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the State Fairgrounds. On July 26 & 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. visitors of all ages can watch the competition, learn about the history of wine and see the 10,000 plus bottles in the "back room." Then those of legal age can sample.
It's FREE and I dare you to find a corn wine amongst the bottle rows.
