Casba spoken word night creates positive forum for local poets - By Lisa Battiston
posted: Jun. 29, 2007

By Lisa Battiston

Wordsmiths of any and all levels come together at the VOCAB: Spoken Word series every first Tuesday of the month at the Casba.
"After United States of Mind closed, I felt like there was a need for [the spoken word series]," Tatjana "Ms. Rebelle" Byrd, a coordinator for the series, said. VOCAB's July 3, 2007, evening will be the fifth in the series.
Ms. Rebelle collaborated with Deemond "Freeze" Hibbler, who had been trying to put something similar together. Freeze was able to provide the Casba as a consistent venue for the monthly program.
"I got really lucky," Freeze said. "It's hard to find a positive site [for the night]. . . We needed an outlet and I love the basement [of the Casba]. It gave that smokey atmosphere that I love. . . It's perfect."
Each VOCAB features one DJ and one poet to start the evening. After the featured poet, anyone can have a chance to read their own poetry.
"I want people to realize that it's an open forum," Ms. Rebel said. "It's not your typical prose. There are all levels that come in."
"I don't want people to get the impression that it's just lonely poets up there," Freeze said. "We have a lot more fun! . . . It gives me a rush to see people there. I want it to get to the point where, every first Tuesday of the month, people are looking forward to going to the Spoken Word and getting creative. They'll never be disappointed.
"Two different worlds come together there," he said. "There's the hip hop crowd coming in with the artsy crowd. We're bridging a gap and blending a lot of styles."
July's VOCAB on the 3rd begins at 9 pm with doors opening at 8 pm. Allen Imagery will begin the evening as the featured poet with DJ Martini as the featured DJ. Poets of all levels are encouraged to join in the open mic following Allen Imagery.
