Members of the Indianapolis blind community and others from Midwest regions started the day at 9 a.m. in typical Indiana summer style-80-degree weather that continued to climb steadily throughout the day. The Thunder's day started on a low note, with two losses to the Kansas City All-Stars and the Columbus Vipers.
While the team seemed to have trouble making a connection with the ball, strong defensive plays were made by Dameel Writht, Shawn Dobbs and Dave Bemmer.
"We normally play much better than this," Steve Michaels, number 45, commented on Saturday. "The team is actively off today."
While the team seemed to be lacking fundamentals on Saturday, they came back to beat Columbus on Sunday, placing the Thunder in third place with the Kansas City All-Stars taking home the tournament title.
Two thunder players, Dobbs and Bemmer, made the All-Defensive tournament all-stars.
Thunder coach Darnell Booker mentioned that the team was not having their best weekend, but that they were looking forward to playing a tournament in Bolingbrook (located in the Chicagoland area) the following weekend.
As mentioned in a previous article, while the primary concepts of softball exist in the sport of Beepball (a batter, pitcher, bases, etc.), numerous rules are different-starting with the fact that the ball used has motor inside that emits a beeping sound when in motion, and members of both teams are blindfolded.
There are only two bases, first and third, both of which beep after a batter hits the ball.
The Indianapolis Thunder still has numerous tournaments to play in the upcoming months and hopes to make it to the Beepball World Series in Richmond, Virginia.
Beepball tournaments are run by volunteers and funded through community and national sponsorships. If interested in volunteering or sponsoring the members of the Indianapolis Thunder Beepball team, please contact Booker at (317) 371-6267.
