Beats from a Broad Ripple Rat - by Lisa Battiston

Beats from a Broad Ripple Rat header

This past couple weeks have been a ridiculous bout of balancing and karma.
The Peggy Sues' drummer decided that she had some personal things in her life she needed to solve and wanted to quit the band. Alas. We understand but. . . Karma bad.
But the Peggy Sues found a really great and cool new drummer that will hopefully propel them into a new direction. Karma good!
A week and a half ago, Ashley and I found a beautiful house to move into for cheap in the Meridian Kessler area. Karma still good!
And a week ago, the Peggy Sues played a great show in Bloomington at Bear's Place with our friends, the Sprickets. Karma still really good!
And then, after the show, Ashley went skateboarding with the Peggy Sues' new drummer and (dundundun) broke her wrist on a fall. She now has a metal plate and a few metal pins in her wrist. She will be out of commission for between six and 10 weeks. The Peggy Sues were forced into taking themselves off of the bill for four (maybe five if the wrist heals slowly) shows, including one (potentially two) out of town gigs. Karma really, really bad.
One of the shows we had originally booked was at Spencer's Stadium Tavern downtown with the now defunct all-girl band Running from Johnny. Ashley and I had decided to go and support the show anyway, even if we were just fans and not performers. Randomly, Spencer, the owner of the bar, brought Boz Boorer in for a drink. Boz plays guitar for Morrissey. Morrissey, ex-Smiths, played recently at the Murat and is Ashley's faux-God - she has the title of his first solo album tattooed on her back. If this weren't life-clenching enough for her, Boz actually coaxed Morrissey into coming to the bar as well. We didn't actually get to meet Morrissey due to a very large and silent security man but, frankly, we're going to be bragging about that for the rest of our lives. Boz called Ashley the next day to let her know he upgraded her crappy Row Z tickets to front row center and also invited her to the after party. I also bet Boz he couldn't play the first song of the set with one finger. I bet my guinea pig, Duder. Needless to say, Boz did it. I really hope he doesn't come to collect my end of the bet.
So, hey. Karma really, really, really good!
And then, last Monday, my position was eliminated where I work. The freaky part is that I went to a Chinese food restaurant the evening before, cracking open my fortune cookie only to read, "You will find yourself in a new line of employment very soon." See? I was forewarned and I blew it off as a meaningless fortune cookie. Karma kind of really bad.
But, see, as much as I felt lucky to be employed in a field that used the degree I worked so hard for, I kind of hated what I did. While the people I worked with were very nice and friendly, I proofread pharmaceutical articles all day. It was good experience, but not a job I was excited to go to in the morning. Getting laid off was kind of a relief. I have a nice cushion saved up, am expecting a nice chunk of change from my tax return, and am typing up some articles for Ashley that she's going to be very monetarily thankful for. For the time being, I'm okay. And I have a lot of time to move into the new house, which has turned out to be a gigantic project I wasn't expecting (moving a queen size bed up a curvy staircase in a house built in the 1920s is only going to happen when I remember some of angle algebra I learned back in high school).
So currently? Karma is kind of moot, but mindset? Mindset is quite bright.
Though I certainly would encourage anyone in need of an editor or writer to email that little address at the bottom of the article there. Bright mindsets don't necessarily mean they couldn't be brighter with a nice spurt of employment. Just think how much karma you'd be owed if you helped me find a job! Lots!
