More Art: What the Village does best - 54th and Monon Art Festival Preview - By Heidi Huff

By Heidi Huff

Can you imagine providing (free!) hot dogs and lemonade to over four thousand patrons in one day? The people at Reese Kitchens can. Not only can they imagine it, they did it at last year's 54th and Monon Art Fair, and are about to do it again. This year's fair, the seventh annual, is just around the corner. It's June 2nd, 2007, and runs from 10 to 4:30.
This South Broad Ripple summer staple continues to grow in popularity with attendees and artists alike. Attendance is expected to break the four thousand mark, and over 70 artists will adorn the streetside with their wares. Here you will find paintings, ceramics, photography, textiles, glass, jewelry, furniture, and much more to delight the eye.
If delighting the ear is more your style, be sure to catch both mid-day performances. Returning from last year's bill is Finest Grain. It consists of Sean Jackson and Kent Vernon, a local duo who've been gracing the midwest with acoustic rock-and-roll for over 15 years. Added to this year's line-up is local act Chad Mills. Fair goers may remember them from performances at Birdy's, the Patio, and the Smiley Morning Show. They've even rocked out for Bart Peterson's mayoral events!
While you're caught up in all the art and music don't forget to eat! In addition to the aforementioned hot dogs, you'll find much more to munch. You can eat your day away with organic produce from Your Neighbor's Garden, smoothies from Maui Wowi, and ice cream from Trader's Point Creamery. Zest, a 54th and Monon food favorite, will continue to serve it's delectable menu during the art fair.
Broad Ripple is the home to many an art fair, but this one sets itself apart from other seemingly similar neighborhood events by further embracing the community. Molly Hiatt of Reese Kitchens differentiated this fair as, "fun and free." She says, "It's very easy to come and spend time with artists from the area and it's a chance for local businesses to give back." In essence, the fair is put on by the people, for the people. With local art, music, food, and friends, the 54th and Monon Art Fair is a must-not-miss for all.
