The Scott Family of Old Broad Ripple - part five
by Gladys Scott Coffee

High school was an exciting, but scary step up. Our social lives became very important with dates, proms, and other extra curricular activities. Evelyn and I took part in plays and musical shows. I enjoyed writing stories and essays for the year book and when I was a junior I was editor of the 1934 year book. All of the boys were involved in sports and were very good at them. Wally was a football star and was the captain of the football team. Evelyn, always the adventurous one, got into big trouble when Karl Ammerman, our principal caught her and some of her gang smoking behind the big billboard next to the school. In those days smoking was a big sin, especially for girls, so Evelyn was grounded for some time. But eventually we all graduated from high school. That was the end of our formal education.

By 1940 we kids were beginning to leave the family home. Evelyn and I both got married, she to Freedie Hern and me to James Coffee and we moved to homes in the Broad Ripple area. Soon after Wally married his high school sweetheart, Harriett Bray and they lived in Broad Ripple for a few years before they moved out of the area. They had three sons, Troy Wallace Scott III, Ronald and David--another generation of Scott boys that attended BRHS.
During World Was II, Tom and Jack served honorably in the military service. After the war my husband and I and our two children, Diane and Jimmy, moved to Phoenix, Arizona. As the years went by I began to lose touch with friends and happenings in Broad Ripple. So when I did get back for a visit, I was amazed and pleased with the changes that had been made. The town had taken on a new vitality and was attracting new people and new businesses. It had become a busy, thriving and prosperous community.
