Buzzing Around Town

Reviews:

The Peggy Sues
Spencer's Stadium Tavern
March 20, 2007
This show was not in the Broad Ripple area, but it was chock-full of Broad Ripple folks.
Broad Ripple Gazette staffers Ashley Plummer (Associate Editor) and Lisa Battiston (Beats from a Broad Ripple Rat) make up half of the band. The full line-up is: Theresa-vocals, Rachael-drums, Ashley-guitar and Lisa-bass.
The Peggy Sues are terrific fun. They have an energetic, almost punk-rock sound (unlike traditional punk, they play more than three chords). Their songs are fast and upbeat.
You can next see the Peggy Sues at The Melody Inn on Friday, April 23rd, 2007.

The Red Key
I had the song "The People's Day" stuck in my head all day. I was working at the Red Key and was singing it to everyone.
one day our whispers will be
louder than your screams
the people's day will come
I spent the evening waiting on customers and humming the song. As fate would have it, Otis and Amy Lashley walked in. I was telling them that the song was running through my head. Otis told me a great story from his recent visit to Austin, TX for the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW). He attended the March 17th Million Musicians March for Peace event. Several thousand people marched from the Texas State Capitol to the Austin City Hall. Otis was watching the concert at the rally when someone from a San Antonio radio station spotted him and asked Otis to play. In a matter of minutes Otis had a guitar around his neck and was playing "The People's Day." Soon thousands of people were singing the chorus with him.
The song is still running through my head-and it's okay with me.

Preview to the Review of the Peelander-Z show
The Melody Inn, Sunday, March 25, 2007
This review has a little bit of back story-not that you did not expect any.
Saturday night, still at the Red Key:
We all watched Peyton Manning host Saturday Night Live.
My favorite bit was the United Way spoof. Peyton totally played on his squeaky clean image.
Another skit was about a woman who always had to one-up people.
"My brother is also a lawyer"
"I have 60 cousins that live in space."
I felt like that chick as we were watching the show.
I said "I have a friend who works on SNL."
Everyone looked skeptical.
So I had to add "He also works for Conan... and he used to work for Carson...until Carson moved to LA...he also does the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade...the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting...the Times Square Ball Drop...and the CBS Morning Show and NFL games.....he used to be the sound guy for They Might Be Giants...."
You could see the poor-Nora-and-her-imaginary-friend look on everyone's face.
Cut to Sunday night:
At 7:00 my cell phone rang.
JG CELL showed up on the screen.
Holy Crap--John of SNL fame was calling!
He'd just flown in to Indianapolis, and wanted to hang out before he drove to Huntington to spend the week with his family.
He had nothing juicy to tell me about Peyton's appearance. Peyton was as nice as he seems.
Finally, the review:
We went to see Peelander-Z, a Japanese comic punk band.
The NYC-based band is high-energy and demands audience participation. The non-sequitur action band has quite an Indianapolis fan base. The Melody Inn has become their Indy home ever since they played the Midwest Music Summit in 2002. Several of the fans knew what to expect: during the human bowling segment they held up signs indicating "drummer, bass player and guitar needed" and quickly filled the positions. The band turned over their instruments and created a make-shift bowling alley. Bass player Peelander Red was the human bowling pin.
Their songs were high-energy and singing along was encouraged--and aided by more signs helping with the words. The band had the whole room clapping and dancing along. I'm sure JG does not know what to expect when he stops in Indiana. Last time he was here he got his photograph snapped with Santa Otis. This time he left with a glove-box full of Peelander-Z albums.

Previews:

Neko Case
The Vogue
Tuesday, April 10, 2007
doors 7:00, show 8:00 $20
Neko Case is often described as alt-country, but I'm not sure that is totally accurate. She performs a good deal of her own songs, but is also know for her quirky covers-everything from Loretta Lynn to Queen. She's also very funny on stage.
Neko is also part of the power-pop band The New Pornographers (which is not pornographic at all).

Will Hoge
Music Mill
Thursday, April 19th, 2007
doors 7:30/show 8:30 $12
If you've been reading this column for a while you know that I am a huge Will Hoge fan.
Okay, fan might not be a strong enough word. I'm somewhere between fan and stalker.
When I was offered an interview with Will, I decided that it might not be safe for me to be in possession of his phone number (and I was afraid that I'd share it with Kelly Sample).
I called on a devoted, yet more sensible Will Hoge fan to do the interview. Emi Wright-Steczyk and her husband live in Broad Ripple. They have seen most of Hoge's Indianapolis shows and have traveled to at least 10 out-of-town shows throughout the Midwest.
Here is Emi's interview with Will:
Will Hoge is a soulful musician whose raw and pure voice (think Springsteen meets Little Richard) reaches out and embraces you. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Hoge has generated a faithful fan base-one that continues to grow with every Indianapolis tour stop.
As a regular attendee to local-and some non-local-Will Hoge concerts, I can best summarize his shows as simply incredible rock and roll. Actually, that is how Will himself summed up his music. . . "Rock n' Roll". I had the pleasure of interviewing Will recently over the phone from his home in Nashville, Tennessee. Will told me that the passion and energy he and his band put into their live shows and music is as much for him and his band as it is for the audience. He stated that he wants you to come away with "a sense of honesty, this is a real band, who we are and what we do". He just wants people to respect what he and his band do for a living.
Hoge's latest album, the live Again Somewhere Tomorrow, takes listeners through an elegant mix of muscular American rock-and-roll and soulful ballads. It is an excellent representation of what Hoge and company do on a nightly basis-play an assortment of ass-kicking rock-and-roll.
His live performance is unparalleled. When a performer has the power to stand on a stage in front of several hundred and belt out a tune without the benefit of a microphone, then immediately follow it with straight-ahead surging rock-and-roll, it is certainly an interesting and entertaining sight to see.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
