Random Rippling - Saving the stone: Dawson Building razed for new project
posted: Mar. 09, 2007
Thanks to Victoria Burch a small, but heavy, piece of Broad Ripple history was preserved. Victoria purchased the Dawson building last year when Crumpton's Broad Ripple Refinishing closed. Victoria will be building a three-story retail and residential structure at the 916 Westfield Boulevard address. When I heard that the old building would come down, I asked Victoria if we could get the Dawson stone off the front of the building for the Broad Ripple museum collection (and, my grandmother was a Dawson). She agreed, and even arranged for a stone mason to cut the stone out for us. The stone removal ended up a bit too exciting for the crew, as it decided to pop itself out of the brick wall at the wrong time. We have the stone now, and hopefully some day it will be in the Broad Ripple museum with the hundreds of other artifacts we have collected.
