Super Bowl Sunday
Sunday, February 4, 2007
I watched the Super Bowl at Anne-Marie Dezelan's party. Anne-Marie knows how to throw a party, really throw a party. She does it for a living. AnnieO's Events is located in Broad Ripple. She had televisions, a DJ, pompoms, streamers, megaphones, and cowbells (more cowbell, please). Oh, and food.
Of course, the game was wonderful-woo hoo Colts! I adored the halftime show. I'm a Prince fan, but this was beyond my wildest expectations. Prince singing a Foo Fighters song. Be still my heart!
After the game I headed to Spin to check out the Mudkids show. The Mudkids had a big week with their hip-hop anthem to the Colts "Go Blue." The video for the song had thousands of hits on YouTube and hundreds of downloads from MySpace. I arrived too early for the music, but I did get to hold the door open for DJ Rusty.
I walked down Broad Ripple Avenue. Lots of people running down the street and having fun in the wake of the Colts victory.
Next stop, Moe and Johnny's. The bar was packed and folks were celebrating-dancing on tables sort of celebrating. It was fun to grab a beer, lean against the bar and watch.

Black Beauties
Saturday, February 9, 2007
Red Key Tavern
I was working at the Red Key Tavern (your waitress and cook) when a group of guys came in. They asked me what time it was here and said the clock in their van was off an hour. They were wearing leather and Chuck Taylors and had plenty of tattoos.
I went out on a limb: "Are you playing the Melody Inn tonight?" I can recognize my people.
Saturday is Punk Rock Night at the Mel. I keep missing it because of work, but I'm sure it is a blast. Greg Brenner does a great job bringing in bands from all over the country. Black Beauties are from Chicago and a swell group of guys. Their show made the list of the Top Ten Live shows in Indianapolis for the week, and I enjoyed showing them that. I wanted to tell them that I vote on the panel, but I restrained myself.
I didn't have to tell them about the Red Key rules, because they didn't break any. As an old punk-rocker I might be biased, but overall punk-rock kids are the nicest, most accepting folks I know. These guys were polite and fun to wait on (and good tippers!).
I've been enjoying their Web site. You can listen to their great power pop music and play Astroids. I'll be sure to catch them the next time they are in town.

Snow Day
Tuesday, February 13, 2007
Northside News Café
Like penguins heading back to our eggs, folks from all over the neighborhood trudged through snow drifts and stuck cars to wind up at the News Café. Dear Liz manned the counter on the snowy cold day. There was an eclectic group of artists, writers and folks with real jobs hanging out that afternoon. The highlight was Russell Johnson (Rusty Redenbacher, DJ Rusty, Mudkids) entertaining us with his dance moves. It felt good to get out and laugh.
It also reminded me of why I live in this neighborhood.

Previews:

Vocal Ease
Friday, February 23, 2007 8:30/10:30 $15
Jazz Kitchen
5377 N. College Ave - 253.4900
I don't know what the format for this show is, but this is a kick-ass roster of the best Indianapolis singers. All styles seem to be represented. The line-up includes Mary Moss, Cynthia Layne, Everett Greene, Larry Greene, Brenda Williams, Ezra Todd Shelton, Tad Robinson, Jessica Benge and Tim Brickley. I've had the pleasure of hearing most of them perform. I don't know who managed to get them all in the same room at the same time, but good job!

Musical Family Tree Showcase
Friday, February 23, 2007
Spin
6308 N. Guilford Ave (formerly the Patio) 9 pm
Richard Edwards of Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos
The Sheds from Covington, Kentucky
Carl Broemel from Old Pike and Planet Earth
Christian Taylor from America Owns The Moon
That is all that needs to be said, really. Go-you won't be disappointed.

Edie Carey and Anje Duvekot
Tuesday, February 27, 2007
Boulevard Place Café 7 pm, $10
4155 Boulevard Place 283.2233
Both of these singer-songwriters are Boston based, so I'm guessing that our fair weather will not seem so bad to them.
Edie was a CATH coffeehouse favorite and always puts on a great show. Get there in time to eat dinner and enjoy the folk-pop show. Edie always packs the house.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
