RICK'S TOP 20 OF THE YEAR
The verdict is in...Rick picked his favorite top 20 albums for 2006. In this issue, we will display 11 through 20...look in the next issue of the Gazette to see who wins the number one slot.
11. JOSH RITTER-Animal Years - Singer-songwriter whose melodic hooks stay with you long after the album's finished. In a genre currently overflowing with contenders, Ritter rises above the pack simply by virtue of penning great songs that pay off both musically and lyrically.
12. SONIC YOUTH-Rather Ripped - The band goes for short and concise pop nuggets this time out, and shows they are as adept at this game as at the long guitar wig-outs for which they are so well known.
13. RADIO CITIZEN-Berlin Serengeti - Another album constructed out of samples and bits of live performance by the players, Radio Citizen's debut is a groove-filled funky treat that encompasses world-beat, rock, soul, and all the stops in-between.
14. WAX TAILOR-Tales Of The Forgotten Melodies - A soulful, groove-filled hip-hop album that owes nothing to "gangsta" and everything to the 70s and 80s, as well as film-noir.
15. LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM-Under The Skin - First solo album in 14 years confirms that Buckingham still has his songwriting chops as well as some adventurous production techniques. It's like Fleetwood Mac's Tusk album only with better, sparer songs.
16. CUT COPY-Bright Like Neon Love - Starting off with electro-synth grooves, Bright Like. . . eventually winds up rocking out far more successfully than most of their techno brethren. It is this range that makes the album such a joy to listen to from start to finish.
17. RACONTEURS-Broken Boy Soldiers - Far more than a Jack White side project, his pairing up with Beatlesque songwriter Brendan Benson paid off handsomely with this Stones-meets-Beatles in a clean garage hybrid.
18. SPARKLEHORSE-Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain - Mark Linkous returns after a four-year absence to give us yet another melancholy gem that is equal parts pain and cheer.
19. CHILDS-Yui - Veering towards ambient territory, Childs has created a mellow wonder that invites you to float away while humming softly to yourself.
20. PSAPP-Tiger, My Friend - Child-like wonder pervades this album of female vocals, synths, "toytronica" keys and embellishments.
