Beats From a Broad Ripple Rat - by Lisa Battiston

Beats from a Broad Ripple Rat header

I seem to always write about what I love about Broad Ripple. I seem to always write about not wanting to change a thing about this Village, that the people are just fantastic, the restaurants awesome, the bars thrilling, the stores fruitful, and! Oh me, oh my.
So. Today. Right now. I'm going to write about something I think Broad Ripple is lacking in, something I think people who frequent the Village might enjoy (and, frankly, something I might enjoy, too - all right, I confess, I write about it mostly out of very selfish reasons of wanting to see it happen in Broad Ripple just because I want it to).
I ask for one night a month. Just one night. One night we can dance ourselves silly. One night where we can dance ourselves silly to REALLY GOOD MUSIC.
Now, I don't mean to imply that popular music we hear coming out of bars on Friday and Saturday nights is not good music (regardless of whether or not I think that's true, I don't mean to imply it). But I call for.. I call for!
What is it I call for?
I call for indie rock music! I call for dance punk! I call for the Cure and the Smiths and the Faint and VHS or Beta and She Wants Revenge and the Clash and OK Go and Le Tigre and the Ramones and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Bravery and Interpol and the Kills and Daft Punk and god knows how much more music! I call for it! Bring it here to Broad Ripple! And bring it soon!
Because if you play it, they will come. I can guarantee it. I've been to too many parties with this music playing to guarantee that people from all over the city wouldn't come to dance. Bigger cities like New York and London have indie rock nights, and I ask Broad Ripple to just have one night - just one finite night - to test it out. Just test it out once. If it bombs, kill it, it wasn't meant to be and boo on me for trying.
But c'mon, venues. Give it to us just this once. Let us dance like we want to. Let us come to your bars and spend loads of money and just sweat it off on to the dance floor. Give us an Indie Rock Night. Heck, if you don't mind someone playing from their I-Tunes, I'll even DJ - beyond that, I know plenty of people with much bigger music collections than mine who would be willing, who are waiting, to DJ something exactly like this.
So let's do it, Broad Ripple. Let's dance our collective pants off. Let's rock out to some phenomenal, timeless music. Let's do it. Let's dance.
