The process of merging the Indianapolis Police Department and Marion County Sheriff's Department is progressing nicely. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will remain committed to public safety through community policing. The goal, pertaining to officer assignments, is to keep as many officers/deputies as possible in their current neighborhoods. This will allow for a smooth transition.

The county will be divided into six geographic areas for policing purposes: (Metro North, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest, and Downtown). A map which depicts the boundaries is attached for your review.

As the new department takes shape, adequate facilities are a necessity. The current IPD North District building located at 4209 N. College does not provide ample office/parking space for the more than 200 employees who will be assigned there on 1/1/07. The plan is to move the North District to 3120 East 30th Street (the current IPD East District building) and relocate the IMPD Northeast District to 3229 N. Shadeland (the current location of MCSD Training). Vacating 4209 N. College will make that space available as a substation and a permanent home for units such as the street level enforcement detail (SLED), Youth Services, etc. Officers will continue to maintain a strong visible presence in your neighborhood.

The new District Headquarters will be:

• North District - 3120 East 30th Street
• Northeast District - 3229 N. Shadeland Avenue
• Southeast District - 1150 S. Shelby Street
• Southwest District - 551 N. King Street
• Northwest District - 3821 Industrial Boulevard (pending approval)
• Downtown District - 25 W. 9th Street
