2nd Annual BR Home Tour Coming Sat, September 30, 2006
by Alan Hague
posted: Sept. 22, 2006

Last year's Bungalows of Broad Ripple tour was a blast! This year the tour has been opened to other housing styles and has been renamed the Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour. All of the details of this year's event are below.
--------------------
Broad Ripple homeowners will open their doors to tour guests during the Second Annual Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour which is scheduled for Saturday, September 30, 2006, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Last year's inaugural tour exceeded all expectations: more than 1200 people attended. This number is expected to increase for this year's tour. The 2005 tour wasn't just a local event - attendees traveled as far away as Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania to explore the rooms and walk the hallways of the eight Bungalow-style homes
This year's Historic Home Tour is host to ten homes from the 1910's through the 1930's. The tour illustrates the architectural diversity of this era of home development, including Bungalow, Craftsman, English Cottage, Tutor Revival, and American Four Square style homes.
"The majority of the homes on this year's tour were constructed within a twenty year period," said Sue Zilisch, Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour Chairman. "Unlike today's single builder subdivisions, individuals either built the homes themselves, or hired a builder to do the job. This accounts for the wide array of architectural design found in the tour homes and throughout Broad Ripple today."
From its rural beginnings and central transportation plans, Broad Ripple has a rich history of progressive Indiana business and residential development. Three homes on this year's tour represent the first wave of residential growth moving south along the streetcar line towards Indianapolis, prior to Broad Ripple's annexation into Indianapolis. One home on the tour was finished within six months of construction and was sold on October 29, 1929 - the day known as "Black Tuesday" when the New York Stock Exchange collapsed. What were the thoughts of the new owners on that day when they purchased the house on 6064 Broadway?
While the Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour doesn't endeavor to answer such questions, sharing and celebrating the history of the area and the homes is very much at the heart of this annual event.
Old National Bank is once again the presenting sponsor for this year's tour and is the exclusive outlet for pre-event ticket sales. Tickets are $10.00 in advance, and are available at the eight Old National Bank locations. Visit www.oldnational.com for a list of locations. Tickets will be available the day of tour for $12.00 at the Home Tour tent located at the 6135 N. College Avenue location of Old National.
