Buzzing Around Town

Review
Vinyl Shriner
Rouge Thursday, August 31, 2006
I realized that I had not seen any music for almost two weeks. I think that I was still recovering from the Midwest Music Summit overload. It worked out well that a band I've wanted to see (I can't count the Birdy's Christmas party - there were helium and Santa suits involved - on their part, not mine) was playing at Rouge.
Vinyl Shriner has been playing together for a decade, and I've known one of them even longer. Bass player Tom Esterline and I went to Sunday school together in the 1970's. I'm sure that had nothing to do with them naming an album "Dressed For Church".
They sound like they've played together for years, in a good way. Sometimes after bands are together for a long time, they start sounding repetitive. Vinyl Shriner is still fresh sounding. Fun songs, the musicians are all terrific and the harmonies are great. I really enjoyed them. There is no excuse for me not seeing them sooner, even by my high standards of procrastination.
I was happy to see Soundman Dan at the helm of the sound system. Dan was the long-time Birdy's soundman, and also books shows at Rock Lobster. He's a happy addition to Rouge.

Previews
Greek Fest
Friday, September 8, 2006, 4-11 pm
Saturday, September 9, noon-11 pm
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 4011 N. Pennsylvania St
"Party like the Greeks" is the tagline for the 33rd annual Greek Fest. Partying with the Greeks is always fun, as they eat and drink well. I'm a big fan of festivals, and this is one of my favorites. Did you know that church members prepare most of the pastries? They will bake hundreds of dozens of Koulourakia (butter cookies with sesame seeds) and other sweet treats for the festival. Go hungry; there will be plenty to eat, both savory and sweet. There will be traditional Greek wines and KEO beer.
Music and dance are also a big part of the celebration. Dance troupes and Greek bands will be performing both days. I'm looking forward to hearing the band Kalamatianos play. I don't know a darn thing about them, but I have a strong feeling that they will be fun.
As much as food is a big part of Greek Fest, The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church congregation is aware that not everyone in Indianapolis has enough to eat. They are collecting food for Gleaners (Nora note: bring something nutritious, not that jar of capers in the back of your fridge). Free admission on Saturday from noon-4:00 with a two-can (feel free to bring more) donation. The Greek Fest donates all extra food to Second Helpings.

Steve Allee Big Band
Saturday, September 15, 2006, 8:30 and 10:30 pm
The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave
When Steve Allee says big band, he means it. The sixteen-piece band is a Jazz Kitchen favorite. The all-star cast plays in the traditional style of big bands with a modern twist. The swing arrangements and compositions are by our own nationally recognized pianist Steve Allee.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
