MMS Was a Musical Explosion!

I was out of town for a couple of days (some of you may have noticed that the last issue of the Gazette came out on Tuesday instead of Thursday, allowing a short trip to Lake Wawasee) and missed the first day of the 2006 Midwest Music Summit (MMS). I arrived on the scene Friday evening, picked up my press credentials at the MMS check-in booth at The Monkey's Tale (the bar connected to The Jazz Cooker on Westfield Boulevard) and headed out for non-stop music.
I will leave the reviews to Nora in her column on page 6. I will say that I have never heard louder music than what I heard in the big tent at Connor's Pub. I think of all the performances I attended, Amy Lashley received the biggest ovation after her set at the Jazz Kitchen.
Last year's MMS was split between Broad Ripple clubs and downtown clubs. This year all the venues were in Broad Ripple, with a few just outside the Village - Birdy's, Locals Only, and The Melody Inn.
The magnitude of this annual event is staggering - 300 bands in three days. MMS executive director Josh Baker and all the volunteers did a great job of handling the logistics. The 30 or so venues around Broad Ripple each had between 5 to 20 bands scheduled to play each day. In most cases, each band came with all their own equipment - guitars, keyboards, drum kits, mikes, stands, effects boxes, and monitors. Watching the setup and knockdown every 30 minutes was a show in itself.
Bob Schmidt and I took hundreds of pictures over the three day extravaganza.
