Letter to the Editor - Kathy BeMiller

Note to our readers: Letters to the Editor are the opinions of our readers and not necessarily those of this paper.

Dear Broad Ripple Gazette,
I am a resident of Broad Ripple. I love the area I live in. I enjoy and partake of the shops, restaurants and.....yes....the bar scene as well. I love to stroll the streets and watch the people and diversity that is my town, my neighborhood, my home.
However, in the past year, the streets of my beloved Broad Ripple have become dirty. The dirt seems to be spreading, accumulating and growing. Walking to Scholars Inn for breakfast or going to Starbucks is becoming a chore. The sidewalks are riddled with food, gum, and human waste that seems to grow with each passing Friday and Saturday night. The view of the trash bins behind The Broad Ripple Tavern and Vogue are repulsing on Saturday and Sunday morning. The streets smell and the waste does not seem to go away once each new week begins.
If I was not such a lover of my beloved Broad Ripple, I wonder if I would walk through the dirty streets with my child to get a cup of coffee or a sandwich on the weekend? What message are we sending our community? Will young couples with children start to leave the area for the cleaner suburbs of Indianapolis? Can we afford to keep our "House" this dirty?
I have been known to stay out late at these bars and enjoy all that the "Broad Ripple Bar Scene" has to offer. The bars and restaurants bring money and fame to our town, but it is time that we ask them to pool their money together to clean up the town that brings them jobs and money.
I propose that the Bars and Restaurants of Broad Ripple pay to have the streets, sidewalks, parking areas and alleys cleaned on Saturday and Sunday mornings. If they have to raise drink prices one penny to pay for this, I would understand and I hope the people of Broad Ripple and patrons will as well.
It is right and polite to clean up one's house before having visitors over so that people feel welcomed and special. I feel the town of Broad Ripple should do the same for the tourists and home town visitors that walk its streets, spend money at its restaurants and drink in its bars.
Let's Clean House!

Kathy BeMiller, Broad Ripple Resident
