Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

Life's Ripples header

Everywhere I look I see people searching for love. It is a basic human need to feel connected to someone else. The problem I see is that people tend to look for love in all the wrong places.
Love isn't that hard to find. It can be seen in friends walking the Monon trail, talking about things that matter to them. It can be seen in a parent pushing a child on a swing, or throwing a ball back and forth. It can be seen in a gentle touch or heard in a kind word. Love is all around us, but we sometimes need to be reminded in order to see it.
A part of loving that we don't like to acknowledge much is the tough side of love - the love that endures through hard and difficult times. The love that has to say "no", or the love that has to be tough enough to keep a friend from making a bad choice. It's hard to see love in those places, but it is there nevertheless.
As a pastor, I get to see people live out lives of love all the time. My mother had Alzheimer's and had to be put in a nursing home. My dad went to visit her every day even though she didn't even know who he was. He loved her enough to never forget who she was, and that love played out over a two year period as he visited her and fed her every day until she died. I am privileged, and humbled to get to see people of this community exhibit that kind of love.
My wife likes to tell people that God loves them and that there is nothing they can do about it. Another twist on that is that God loves you, and there is something you can do about it. You can share that love each and every day with someone who needs to see it.
