Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

Life's Ripples header

Where is everyone going in such a hurry? While driving down I-465 I started observing the drivers sharing the road with me. I admit I was traveling around 61 to 62 m.p.h. myself, but I passed no one while car after car passed me (posted speed limit was 55).
One guy was holding a shirt out of his window (drying it?) while weaving in and out of traffic. Another woman was smoking with one hand and talking on her cell phone with the other hand, I was hoping she had a third hand I wasn't seeing.
It is estimated that Columbus' ships averaged 2 miles an hour on their voyage. We get bummed if we get caught behind someone going the actual posted speed limit. It is probably a good thing that it took all these years for technology to enable us to go this fast. Otherwise, we may never have discovered America; the Lewis and Clark expedition would never have happened; and, forget the pioneers making their way across the Rocky Mountains. We would have simply rushed right past all these great opportunities.
Sometimes it may be important to go fast, but not all the time, and certainly not when it is an endangerment to others. This need we have to constantly be doing something, or going somewhere is causing major stress in our lives. Learning to relax, to say "no", and to really enjoy the day should not have to take major scheduling or planning.
One of my absolute favorite times is when my wife and I walk our dog. Often we will walk quite a distance without ever saying a word. It is a time for us to think, pray, and process what's going on in our lives. It is such a pleasant time to get away from the world, and we make time for it daily. I remember a great line from an old Simon and Garfunkel song, "Slow down, you move too fast", seems to be a lot of wisdom in those lyrics.
