Buzzing Around Town

Reviews
Chad Mills and The Rivalry
Birdy's May 18, 2006
Over one hundred people came out on a school night for Chad Mills' CD release party. Everyone had a great time and left with a CD in hand. I love the CD; it has not left the player in my car. It is rare when a disc holds my attention for that long. Two Places @ Once is full of love, angst and accountability. I am really drawn to the song Purgatory. As a Catholic school child, I was sure that Purgatory was a waiting room full of babies that had died before they were baptized and people who had committed venial sins and not repented properly. I have a different vision of purgatory now, and as Chad sings about being "stuck here in my own purgatory," it can also be a very real feeling.
Chad did not start playing music until he was close to finishing a degree in engineering from Rose-Hulman University. In the last eight years he has written hundreds of songs, and recorded five albums. I'm sure he is most proud of his latest production---daughter Abby Elizabeth was born May 25th.

Broad Ripple Art Fair
Indianapolis Art Center May 21st
I saw the Art Fair through new eyes this year: I spent the day with my niece Molly (almost six years old) and nephew John (three and a half years old). Luckily they enjoy the same things Auntie Nora does, which are music and food. We decided to take the shuttle from Broad Ripple Park to the Art Center grounds. I forgot how much the park has to offer - I think Molly and John would have been happy to watch the dogs and hang out on the swings all day. After twelve years of riding the school bus, I'd forgotten the thrill of riding on a yellow bus (I think the charm wore off for me in sixth grade). It was the perfect way to get to the fair. The kids loved it, and I appreciated how quickly it delivered us to the festivities without having to cross any busy streets.
Our first musical stop was to see Michael Kelsey. Michael won the 2004 Guitarmageddon contest-playing an acoustic guitar. Michael is truly entertaining, musically and visually. He pounds, bangs and thumps on his guitar and the result is outstanding. He gets the audience involved, creating songs from suggestions and making music on anything that is handy. Michael asked John for a suggestion; even as creative as Michael is he couldn't come up with anything for "I'm squished." Michael played us his "happy place" song. And a happy place it is, filled with magic tricks, Pixie Stix, jump ropes, kaleidoscopes, rainy days and rainbows. As much as he is a one-man-band, he invited Dog Talk founder Michael Beck to join him on stage. I told Molly and John that Michael Beck played at their parents' wedding reception; they were not as interested in the back-story as I am.
Our next stop was the Art Center's childrens' activity tent. Molly and John made suns, complete with rays. The volunteers were very patient, helping with cutting, pasting and cleaning up the gobs of glitter involved in making a proper sunshine. We then made our only stop at an art booth. It's not nearly as fun to look around when you're worried about breaking something or knocking it over-not that I don't worry about me tripping over something constantly, but now that fear was multiplied three times. The artists in the gingko gallery booth were very patient. John loved splashing in the fountains, and Molly loved Maura Ahearn's jewelry.
Food Town (as we were calling it) was our next stop. Dave Allee treated the kids to a Jazz Kitchen strawberry smoothie. There was a wide variety of food available, so naturally we got corndogs and fries, with a lemon shake-up to wash it all down. We hustled ourselves back over to the children's tent to hear Ruditoonz. I knew Scott Rudicel could be silly, and it was fun to see it full force. Rudi sang songs of yellow yo-yos and monsters in his basement with help from his band of young audience members. Rudi had the best merchandise table I've seen (it could be that most merch tables I see are in dark and smoky bars). John snapped up a yellow yo-yo, and Molly got a pink tee shirt and a CD.
Naturally, after a big rock-show the next stop is the tattoo parlor. The Art Center volunteers were at the ready. John appropriately chose a guitar, and Molly stars. On our way to hear more music we made a stop at the Kettle Corn booth, where we ran into Logansport cousin Kelly and her getting-taller-by-the-day son, Taylor. We practically ran to the Riverfront Stage, with a detour by John to sit in the middle of the sidewalk and play with rocks (but who has not wanted to do that?). Our goal was to catch the Jennie Devoe Band, and we made it for the last two songs. Jennie and her band were terrific as always. We then dragged our tired selves to the shuttle stop and took a thrilling ride back to the park. A good time was had by all.

Jeremiah Birnbaum
Local's Only May 25, 2006
I first met Jeremiah when he played the Midwest Music Summit three years ago. He played a showcase at CATH, Inc., and he quickly made friends with the other performers. He also played an impromptu Sunday morning concert that year, and music collaboration was born. The musicians he met that weekend continue to tour the county as Mercy Driver. Jeremiah has made fans and friends in Indianapolis, so he hits the city a couple of times a year. He is always welcome to my sofa, and I feel like I've kept up with his career through his visits in my living room. I had not had the opportunity to see him perform solo for quite a while. He sounded great! His powerful voice combined with his intelligent songwriting was a treat.
Amazing enough, this was my first visit to Locals Only. I knew I would like the idea of the bar, live music, original artwork and an amazing beer selection. I really like the bar itself. It was very comfortable, the owner David was very nice, and it was chock full of locals. I ran into the photographer Jeff Bedel, comedian Otto, Hostel John and WTTS's Emily.
I was glad to see that they offer wireless connection. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

Mikel and Arminta
Broad Ripple Farmers Market May 27, 2006
It was a gorgeous day for the first Farmer's Market of 2006 and the inauguration of the new location behind Broad Ripple High School. It's easy to find, has plenty of parking and an easy coast off the Monon Trail. I felt like we were all coming out of hibernation. Dogs were straining at their leashes to sniff each other, and people were breaking out their summer clothes. Mikel and Arminta kicked off the season with acoustic Celtic and world music. I had a very European breakfast: cheese from Traders Point Creamery, a croissant from Rene's, coffee from Hubbard and Cravens, and good company with Robin and Dave.
I'm still looking to fill some spots for Music at the Market. Please e-mail me if you're interested in performing.

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
