Dinner and a show
Thursday, February 23
Broad Ripple Steak House - The Upper Room - 929 E. Westfield Blvd.
The Broad Ripple Steakhouse houses three separate venues: the Steakhouse itself, The Bar across the hallway and The Upper Room upstairs. Dinner was wonderful (seared Ahi tuna-ummm), and the terrific Brian Deer was playing an acoustic show in the Upper Room. Brian is an alumnus of Citizens Band. He's also an IPS music teacher taking a year off to concentrate on his music (and teach some guitar lessons). Brian was performing the title track from his CD, Black Cloud Talk, when we walked in. Black Cloud Talk is a very personal album for Brian. He was not afraid to let his emotions, both happy and sad, shine through in these songs. As much as I loved the roots rock sound of Citizens Band, I really enjoy the insightful singer/songwriter side of Brian.

I always feel very grown-up in the Upper Room. The room has a very swanky feel since the remodel almost a year ago. There is an actual stage, great artwork, and marvelous service.

Shrove Tuesday, March 28
Red Key Tavern - 5170 N. College Ave
Yat's - 5363 N. College Ave
My family takes the Lenten season very seriously, which means we also make the most of celebrating of Fat Tuesday. Traditionally Shrove Tuesday is a day of introspection and preparing yourself for Lent. It is also a last chance to partake in all of the stuff you are giving up for six weeks. I'm not a smoker, but I always have a cigarette on Fat Tuesday. I hate to be left out of the revelry! It's become a tradition to have Russel Settle, owner of the Red Key, light it for me. It's also traditional for me to cough and sneeze through it, but it's the official start of the party for me.
This year my family moved our merrymaking down the street to Yat's. Joe Vuskovich sure knows how to throw a party. He provided lots of the New Orleans style food his restaurant is famous for, a great band and lots of beads. With Joe and Gina's hospitality, the party happened from there, spilling out on the sidewalk. The Benders, which feature my all-time favorite singer, Tad Armstrong kept the crowd well entertained. Several people in attendance were in costumes. I love the neighborhood atmosphere of the celebration. It felt like a reunion, a chance to hang out with all the cool people that had been hiding all winter. Of course, it feels like a party filled with cool people (especially the staff) anytime you're in Yat's.

Previews

Jeff Bedel Artist of the Month Gallery Opening
Locals Only - 2449 E. 56th Street - Friday, March 10th
I met Jeff at CATH Inc, when he'd come to photograph touring musicians. Jeff has always been a big fan and supporter of original music, so his gallery show at Locals Only is the perfect fit. Jeff photographs a wide variety of subjects, but I'm always drawn to his music gallery. He has a great line-up of musicians scheduled to play: The Story, Little Voice and Dorsey. If you can't make the show, Jeff's work will be hanging until March 31st.

Locals Only first annual Saint Patrick's Day show
Il Troubadore and Alair Celtic Quartet
Locals Only - 2449 E. 56th Street - Friday, March 18th 6pm
Il Troubadore, Indy's 16th Century Rock Band, is often accompanied by belly dancers, but I'm not sure if that will be the case this night. Their (the band, not the belly dancers) influences are classical Middle Eastern music and heavy metal. As you can imagine these guys are versatile. . . and have a great sense of humor.
The Alair Quartet is also Indianapolis based. They play flute, violin, cello and harp.
This will be a fun Saint Patrick's Day evening.

Peal's Traveling Rock and/or Roll Show
Birdy's - 2131 E. 71st Street - Tuesday's through March 21st
I'm sorry I didn't write about this earlier. It's a great idea. Peal (formerly known as Pale-not to be confused with the Texas Pales any longer) has taken up residence on Tuesdays at Birdy's for the last few months. They play from 8-10, and then a guest band takes the stage. I'm really sorry I missed the Rock Star Karaoke nights - just like Karaoke, but with a live band!
I've been a big fan of Tim Wilsbach since his Paging Raymond days. Peal plays adult-smart-pop. I've always been a fan of pop music, and that's hard to do when you're in your forties. Their new CD should be out soon, now that the whole name thing has been straightened out. Make an effort to catch this fine band. The shows are fairly early on Tuesdays, so it also fits into the adult-smart-real-job world also. Special guests: 3/14- Red House, 3/21-Mardaley

Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time.
