Many Old Photos Shown at the March History Saturday
posted: Apr. 15, 2005

We had a good crowd for the March History Saturday at the Whistle Stop Deli, 64th and Cornell Avenue. Approximately 15 history buffs came to eat breakfast and to swap stories.
Chuck Huppert brought some photos of the 587 Nickel Plate engine.
Bob Hessong arrived with a large scrapbook of old photos. Included were many pictures of the last running of the Monon passenger service. There was also a 1923 photo of Broad Ripple High School.
Anne McCord brought two aerial photos of Keystone Heights, taken in the 1950s. This is an area near 69th Street, west of Keystone.
Paul Walker gave us a 1942 Broad Ripple High School Riparian newspaper.
Bob Alloway donated a packet of historical items. In it was a 1934 school 80 8th grade class photo and a 1914 group photo taken in front of the Boardman home on Westfield Boulevard.
Bob Durham is a first-time attendee who found out about our get-together at Backyard Birds. He shared several memories, including when Kroger's was at 54th and College, where Moe & Johnnies is today.
Mrs. Edie brought a number of old Broad Ripple postcards. At a previous History Saturday she mentioned that her grandparents once lived at 6372 Guilford, in what is now Peggy Taylor's Salon. Les Duvall also mentioned that his grandparents lived at 6372. Today, both were at the Whistle Stop. We introduced them and recorded some of the history of that address. We will include that story in an upcoming issue of the Gazette.
We thank Jim Bradford, owner of the Whistle Stop, for providing the location and the free coffee. Our next gathering will be Saturday, April 16, from 8am to 10am. The May meeting will be on May 21st.

History Saturday is a busy time at the Whistle Stop. There are so many stories to write down and photos to archive.
