Life's Ripples from Broad Ripple United Methodist Church by Rev. Timothy Rasmussen

I believe God puts us here to be in relationship with him and with other people. Maybe we do not feel we can play a significant role in very many lives, but I disagree. We come in contact with far more people than we may realize. It is amazing how much influence one person can have.
Watching the coverage of the death of Pope John Paul has helped me come to this conclusion. Millions of people are flocking to pay their respects and/or attend his funeral. Yes, he was in a position that allowed him to exert tremendous influence, and most people will never have that kind of position. However, he was in that position more for the kind of man he was, and not just because he carried the title of Pope. By showing interest in people, being caring and friendly, we can play a vital part in others lives, as he did.
Even if we do not come in personal contact with someone, we can still influence lives by sending money to a mission project, or donating food to an organization that helps people in need. I am aware of one local pantry that has already helped feed over 1000 families this year. We will not be able to help everyone by ourselves; however, if each of us influenced just those few people we come in contact with day to day, we certainly could make the world a much better place.
