Local Artist Inspired by Classic Artists and Personal Challenges
by Alan Hague
posted: Jan. 07, 2005

James Horn has been interested in art his entire life and he has been actively selling paintings for about one year. "2004 was the year to break out," said James, "to get involved in the local art scene and in the community."

His most recent show was a collaboration with C.W. Pruitt at Carriage House Glendale apartments. "That show gave the residents a chance to see art," said James. "Sometimes it is hard for them to get out to a gallery. The show was very well received. We hope to do a bigger one in 2005."
This year, James was part of April Show. It is a downtown showcase for Indianapolis artists that have overcome adversity and broken through barriers. James is candid about his previous addictions. "I am sober now," said James. "Overcoming my drug and alcohol addictions - that pain inspired my art. I also got into poetry to express myself. To break through the pain."
James recently participated with 120 artists in Masterpiece in a Day. The basis of the show was for each artist to create a piece in seven hours. "Stream of Thought", see left, is what James created. It is a 3' by 4' painting on canvas.
James said his early artistic influences came from Van Gogh, Picasso, and Goya. Although his inspirations are based on the masters, James is greatly influenced today by art forms not even recognized by some, such as graffiti and tattoos. Graffiti has developed into a highly-refined expression, as showcased by the recent Midwest Graffiti Expo Subsurface that still adorns the walls and alleys of Broad Ripple.

"Because I have no formal art training," said James, "I am considered an outsider artist. I exhibited at the Outsider Art Show downtown in October."
Much of Horn's paintings are abstract. His technique is self-described as Stream of Consciousness: "A technique whereby one learns to analyze one's own life situation and then to transform it so as to achieve liberation from oppression."
James wrote the following about his process:

Thursday Night Coffee Shop

Thursday Night, sizzling bright
A day away from the show
The coffee's on
The papers are flowing,
The Art is on the Wall
The critics anticipation or revelation
to see something new.
The non-representational style
of a very Mild
Abstract Artist
is Stream of Consciousness
The Stream from a Dream
That came to him on
a day like Tonight -
Manic he vibes under
pressure - Thursday Night
at the Coffee Shop

Unlike many artists who keep large collections of their work, James would rather have his art out in the world. He keeps one piece for himself, only selling prints. A non-abstract piece, "Shaman smoking pipe", represents the Native American people's plight. Smoking the peace pipe symbolizes making a new beginning for himself.
"My art is an expression of my thoughts and emotions. It is how I look at the world around me. It is the vehicle for my language. It is how I capture fragments of ideas, and assemble them on my canvas in ways that make sense to me."
The art of James Horn makes sense to many. I am sure that we will be seeing his works hanging more frequently around Broad Ripple.
