This Week's Spotlight

Yats

Yats is a restaurant that majors in Cajun food. In fact they don't serve any other kind of food there. Located at 5363 N. College in the SE corner building near the Jazz Kitchen, it is not a place easily spotted. I'm certain it has been overlooked by many a hungry soul. The service is friendly, and the menu was completely new and a little intimidating to me. All entrees are $5.00, and the names of the entrees on the menu are Vegan Pozole, Chite Cheese Etouffee with Crawfish, Jambalaya, and White Bean Maque Choux. How about that for different? Don't ask me to pronounce them! I am not even sure I spelled them correctly.
I ate there twice, once with Mr. Hague of the Gazette, and sampled the Jambalaya and the Vegan Pozole. Both were great - hot and spicy. Drinks are extra and refills are free. The ones available include Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Pepsi.
There is plenty of seating: 13 tables inside, each with two to four chairs. There are five stools at the counter, and four tables with four chairs outside on the sidewalk.
The Internet service is free and the provider of the Internet service is Indy Wireless City. I did not spot any other person with a laptop either time I was there, which means there's lots of bandwidth available. Since I had already signed up with this service when I visited Hubbard and Cravens, I had only to open my browser and sign in with my user name and password. Of course I was again asked to view one of their sponsors on the web page that comes up. Then I was on the web, surfing, and the connection again was great. The following week I again visited and found that the wireless signal reaches outside as well. On a warm day, therefore, you could get your e-mail and eat lunch at a table on the front sidewalk.
There is no technical help offered, and the owner admitted he did not use the service and did not know anything about it. I was happy to hear that he was willing to have this service in spite of his lack of knowledge of wireless technology. This gives us (laptop geeks) another excellent Hot Spot in the Broad Ripple area where we can open a laptop and have some lunch.
I had no trouble finding a place to sit even though there was a steady stream of customers. A lot of young people have taken a liking to this eatery and I can understand why.
PS: For those readers that may not have heard of IndyWirelessCity it is a free Internet Service that requires signing up with your e-mail address, your name, and a user chosen ID and password. Once registered the same user ID and Password will work at any restaurant with an IndyWirelessCity HotSpot.
