Broad Ripple High School Classes Gather for Reunion at Riviera Club
posted: Jun. 24, 2004
June 6, 2004 - Eighty-seven Broad Ripple High School graduates gathered for a annual reunion at the Riviera Club. Present were students from the class of 1928 through the early 1940s classes. Although most still live in Indiana some traveled from Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Ohio and California.
Each alum received a name tag that had their senior class picture. After some opening remarks each attendee had a chance to address the group. "I am so glad to be here! It is good to see everyone again," was expressed by almost every graduate. Many used this opportunity to tell everyone what they have been doing lately. Reid Chapman, class of 1938, who played Chuckles on WISH radio in the 1940s, told a joke.
Letters from some graduates who were unable to attend were read to express their greetings to the attendees and pass on the latest news. Frank and Doras Baird usually come to the reunions but could not this year. Frank was a beloved teacher and athletic coach at Broad Ripple. "Frank and Doras send their wishes to all of us," said Laura Grimme Heidenreich, class of 1941. "They will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary this August."
After Ernestine Fischer Lambertus, class of 1931, was introduced, Frances Kessler VanDerMeulen, class of 1933, stood up upon recognizing her and said, "Ernestine, I used to pass your house when you lived at the Lilly Orchard and you would invite me to play with your dolls and your father would give me apples. I lived just up the street at 79th and College."
Bob Hindman told the crowd about his days at Broad Ripple Park. He used to work at Eyre's Roller Rink that was near the front of the park. He also recalled feeding the lions that were in the zoo under the roller coaster.
Mary Adams Gillum, class of 1941, said that the principal, Karl Ammerman, kept a close eye on her and her sister. "He knew everyone by name. Our father was a mail carrier and stopped at the school each day on his route," recalled Mary. "Mr. Ammerman would tell him what we were up to, so we couldn't get away with anything."
Kelly Tamarri, the dining room manager for the Riviera Club, made sure that everything ran smoothly. Ham, roast beef and fried chicken were available in the buffet lines. There was also a breakfast buffet available.
Before leaving, each graduating class gathered for a class picture. Everyone agreed to meet again next year for another reunion
If you know of a BRHS graduate from 1942 or before that did not receive an invitation to this year's reunion, please contact the Gazette.
